On July 18th, we had the pleasure of welcoming Dame Diana Johnson, MP for Kingston upon Hull North and Cottingham, to our Hedon Road test facility. It swiftly became clear this wasn’tjust a photo op – it was a genuine chance to engage in what’s happening on the ground in Hull’s hydrogen sector, and to have an honest conversation about the future of skills, jobs, and innovation in our region.

Dame Diana, a real champion for Hull and all the businesses based there, was keen to get under the skin of HiiROC – touring the site, chatting with our engineers (including some of our brilliant women in STEM), and getting a firsthand look at the breakthroughs we’re making in clean hydrogen. The talk wasn’t all blue-sky thinking; we tackled the real challenges facing the Humber and the companies based there, especially around building a skilled workforce and creating jobs that last. Dame Diana’s interest in how innovation can drive growth and support the UK’s energy transition shone through.

She saw for herself how companies like HiiROC are helping the Humber lead the charge towards net zero. We discussed why research and development matter, and why this region is perfectly placed to help power the UK’s clean energy future. The tour of our test rig was a highlight – Dame Diana was impressed by the progress made and the spirit of collaboration that defines HiiROC.

At the end of what was her second visit to HiiROC, Dame Diana left us with a clear message: Hull and the Humber have a vital role to play in the UK’s energy story. She’s committed to backing local businesses, championing innovation, and pushing for job creation – both in Parliament and on the ground. That’s the kind of support that makes a difference.

Visits like this are a reminder: innovation isn’t just about technology – it’s about people, partnerships, and a shared vision for a better future. At HiiROC, we’re proud to be at the forefront ofclean hydrogen, and even prouder to be part of a community that’s building something lasting for Hull, the Humber, and beyond.

We’re looking forward to working with Dame Diana and other regional leaders as we keep pushing for affordable, clean hydrogen – and for opportunities that matter to the people of our region. Watch this space.
